Chewing Gum and
Bailing Wire: Big Ideas with Little Budgets

Bob Thacker, OfficeMax
With a long
career in both retail and advertising, Bob Thacker has many stories
to tell. As a brand architect for Target and now OfficeMax, Bob will
demonstrate how building loveable brands, often without big budgets,
is truly possible. In adverse times it's an even greater challenge
to find the true opportunities, but Bob has shown that it's not
impossible. In fact, his mantra "Don't make ads, make news!" has
even greater meaning than ever before.

Emory works in advertising, and is beginning to
crack-up. His latest idea is honesty, e.g. "Volvos, Yes they are
boxy, but they're safe". This doesn't go down too well with the
boss, so Emory is sent to a psychiatric hospital to 'recover'.
Meanwhile, back at the office, Emory's work is accidentally sent to
the printers. His ads are a huge success. But now Emory has fallen
for Kathy (another patient) and so doesn't want to leave. Written

Swanson Russell Media Team Passes
Google Advertising Professionals Exam
Due to the constantly changing technological
environment, Swanson Russell invests considerable time and resources
to educate its employees in order to better serve its clients.
Recently, all ten media department staff members at Swanson Russell
studied for and passed Google's Google Advertising Fundamentals Exam
and became qualified Google Advertising Professionals.
"Swanson Russell made a commitment to digital
advertising training for our entire staff starting four years ago,"
commented Kay Wigle, senior vice president/media director. "The
ever-changing search landscape makes it important for us to stay
abreast of current best practices. And unlike many agencies
that assign a percentage of their media professionals to digital
media, we think it is imperative that our entire staff become
experts in all types of media, including paid search."
Qualified individuals and qualified companies within
the Google Advertising Professionals program have passed the Google
Advertising Fundamentals Exam and have met other requirements in
order to achieve this level of recognition. The Google
Advertising Professionals certification assures Swanson Russell's
clients that its media staffers are trained to save time, maximize
return on investment and help generate new business from Google
searches. The agency will have the right to display the Google
Advertising Professionals logo on company documents.
Founded in 1962 and with offices in Lincoln and Omaha,
NE, Swanson Russell is one of the Midwest's largest full-service
marketing communications firms. Drawing on deep Midwestern roots and
values, the agency makes real connections that build brands for
local, regional and national clients, and move their target
audiences to results-oriented action. Sparked by creativity and
ideas, agency services include branding, strategic planning,
advertising, public relations and media, as well as database and
interactive marketing. For more information about Swanson Russell's
"Real Connection" approach to communications, visit www.swansonrussell.com.

Omaha Public Library's New
Identity
On February 11, the Omaha Public Library unveiled its
new identity and website. The announcement was accompanied by
celebrations at open houses in all of the OPL locations on February
13.
Over a year in development, the new visual identity
and campaign was the result of a partnership between the Omaha
Public Library leadership, the Omaha Public Library Foundation, the
Nebraska Library Commission and Webster Design Associates.
The new OPL identity and branding campaign delivers
the message that the library is more than simply books; it is a
multi-media resource for the entire community, offering movies, CDs,
internet resources and Omahas largest genealogy department. This
identity is the first new branding iinitiative by the OPL in over 30
years and it solidifies OPLs active leadership role in the
educational and cultural fabric of our city.

The identity campaign includes television and radio
spots, outdoor advertising and
posters.
