How long have you been a member of
AAF Omaha?
As a student, two years. As a
professional, about eight months.
Why did you join AAF
Omaha?
To get more involved in the design
community and meet other designers.
Who got you involved and how has
involvement benefitted you?
My art professors urged me to join
so I could enter design competitions and go to events such as "Meet
the Pros." At MTP I was given the opportunity to network with
professionals in the design industry, which gave me a better
understanding of which agencies I wanted to work for. Besides
helping me land a job, the AAF made it possible for some of my
student work to be recognized on both a local and national level
through the ADDYs. It's allowed me to push myself as a designer and
raise my standards for the year to come.
If a song were to describe you,
what song would it be?
"Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega. To
be completely honest, I've considered this a personal theme song of
mine for several years. Yes, I have a theme song.
What do you do when you think no
one is looking?
At work, I touch up my makeup by
using my 4"x4" coaster that also doubles as a mirror. No one
suspects a thing.
If you became a multi-millionaire
overnight, what would you buy?
A new car. I currently drive what
can only be described as a automotive phenomenon. With well over
230,000 miles, it surprises me that it still starts.
What are some of the different
jobs that you have had in your life?
I've held all sorts of jobs, from
waitressing to working in a print shop. My all-time favorite was
also my first: working at a hotdog stand during Nebraskaland Days.
You can't leave home
without?
My keys. I have my car and house
keys on the same chain, and yes, I've locked myself out of both on a
few occasions. There's nothing like that sinking feeling when you
shut your front door, take a couple steps toward your car, and then
realize that something important is missing.
Imagine you woke up in the morning
and discovered you'd switched bodies with someone you know. What
would you do?
Call in sick, and hope I don't
look like Rob Schneider in "The Hot Chick."

The American Advertising Federation Omaha (AAF
Omaha)
Wins National
Awards
The American Advertising Federation Omaha (AAF Omaha), a
professional organization of advertising agencies, marketers, media,
academia and public relations practitioners, won several national
American Advertising Federation awards including first place in the
category of Public Service, and second place in Advertising
Education, Government Relations and Membership. Awards were
presented during the national American Advertising Federation annual
conference June 10-12, 2010 in Orlando, Florida.
The AAF Omaha received top honors for its public service
advertising campaign developed for the Domestic Violence
Coordinating Council (DVCC) Family Justice Center of the Midlands.
The DVCC is an Omaha-based non-profit providing prevention,
intervention, and treatment techniques for assisting individuals,
area organizations and agencies dedicated to serving those effected
by and at greatest risk of domestic violence. Members of Omaha's
advertising and marketing community donated time and resources to
complete the public awareness campaign. AAF Omaha will continue
their partnership with the DVCC through the 2010 calendar
year.
Each year, the AAF Omaha chooses a local non-profit
organization to receive a comprehensive advertising campaign at
little or no cost. Local non-profits can apply to be considered for
the 2010-11 Public Service Campaign. The application can be found
online at www.aafomaha.org. Recent
campaign recipients include Partners for Meth Prevention, The Hope
Center, Shaken Baby Task Force, The Kim Foundation/Project Relate,
Youth Emergency Services and Children's Respite Care
Center.
AAF Omaha also won national American Advertising
Federation awards for second place in Advertising Education,
Government Relations and Membership. "Receiving recognition for AAF
Omaha's club achievements was exhilarating! The creative and
talented collection of AAF Omaha members' collective work is
extraordinary and rival those across the nation", said AAF Omaha
president, Jane Shinn.
AAF Omaha educates members on the
latest trends in technology, creativity and marketing through
seminars, monthly luncheon speakers, exhibitions and trade shows. In

Omaha's national award winning programs is Meet the Pros, attended
annually by over 200 students and involves over 150 area
professionals. Meet the Pros is a two-day educational program that
helps college students learn more about the advertising industry,
become better prepared for the "real world," and meet area
professionals. The American Advertising Federation Omaha each spring

College of Saint Mary Bloom Ad Campaign Blossoms Across
Nebraska
Omaha ad agency Redstone animates real-life stories of success in
its latest campaign for client College of Saint Mary.
REDSTONE created a campaign of 18 television and radio spots,
three of which were produced in Spanish, to tell true stories about
the individuals who study, work and teach at College of Saint Mary.
A recruiting brochure is also in development and extended versions
of the stories appear on the university's website at csm.edu.
With the assistance of College of Saint Mary
representatives, real-life stories from students, professors,
programs and events were identified and highlighted in each of the
commercials. Each of the stories is unique and unusual.
"We told the story of one professor who interviewed Janis Joplin
back in the sixties. One of the students got a NASA grant for a
project showing how to turn moon rock into energy," said Jim
Svoboda, a partner at Redstone. "You can't make up stuff like that,
but there's no better way to show the diversity of perspectives and
opportunities for discovery that are available at College of Saint
Mary."
The television commercials, created in a letterbox format,
feature a story or a group of stories in the form of animated text
and graphics over a bed of uplifting music. "We purposefully
left out a voice over so that the television spots could be an oasis
in the commercial breaks," said Svoboda. "The music is very
inspirational. It illustrates the hope and confidence present at
CSM. It grabs your attention." The REDSTONE account team
includes Svoboda, Jeff Kavan, senior art director, Rod Szwanek,
manager electronic production and Randa Zalman, senior account
supervisor.
College of Saint Mary is a private women's Catholic university in
Omaha that offers students an opportunity to develop their potential
through excellent academics that combine professional and career
preparation with the liberal arts.
REDSTONE is a
marketing agency with expertise in using core human motivations to
strengthen brands and build sales. REDSTONE serves clients locally
and regionally in media strategy, interactive and response marketing
and have offices in Omaha, Nebraska and Des Moines,
Iowa.
